Lady Mondegreen

by Faith on Monday, February 4, 2013

Ye Highlands and ye Lowlands,

Oh, where hae ye been?

They hae slain the Earl O' Moray,

And Lady Mondegreen.

In the 17th century ballad above, the original fourth line is intended to be And laid him on the green, but was immortalized as Lady Mondegreen by American writer Sylvia Wright This phenomenon of mishearing a phrase in a way that delivers a new meaning has therefore come to be known as a mondegreen.  A more modern example is In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, a mondegreen for In the Garden of Eden that stuck and replaced the original song title in the 1968 song by Iron Butterfly.

As technology professionals, it is our job to listen to what our users report, but we must listen with an ear that anticipates a technology mondegreen.  In other words, the user may interpret their experience as “DM… (insert complaint here)!” but the real issue may more likely than not have been caused by something unrelated to eDOCS DM.

EIM is often called upon to assist in the diagnosis of missing edits, application freezes, or performance issues.  We pride ourselves on being Interpreters of Mondegreens, and have built a reputation for delivering comprehensive environment reviews that encompass not only the eDOCS environment but its foundation, as well.  While misconfiguration can certainly cause issues for any software package, EIM has a track record of “fixing the un-fixable” by tracking down lost edits due to faulty OEM network cards, resolving poor SQL performance by identifying an impending drive failure, and correlating application freezes to drive redirection errors.

As the desktop environment becomes ever more complex, organizations require support from a long-term partner who is able to discern the full contextual meaning behind an end-user’s initial description of their experiences and deliver results through correctly interpreting all aspects of the integrated technologies.
